Bayesian perspectives on epistemic value

Readings for Monday

It is time to start reading Joyce. For next Monday, please read sections 1-9 of Joyce’s “Acuracy and coherence”, and skim sections 10-12.

Note: Don’t panic if you don’t understand everything that’s going on! One of the skills it’s good to develop is the skill of getting a big-picture view of what’s going on in a paper without going through all of the nitty-gritty details (leaving those for a 2nd or 3rd reading). This is a good paper to practice that skill on.

Next Week’s Meeting

As some of you may already know, next Monday is Columbus Day, so we will not be meeting then. Fortunately, next Tuesday is a Monday, so we will be meeting then. (Usual time, usual place.)

We will be discussing Stalnaker’s ‘Epistemic Consequentialism’.

Slight Change of Plans

This week we had to postpone our discussion of Kolodny’s paper. So, this coming Monday, that is what we will talk about.

I will update the reading schedule shortly.

This Coming Monday

On Monday we will spend some time finishing up our discussion of Hilary’s paper. You may want to go over it again before our meeting. You may also want to take a look at this short note that Hilary wrote up in response to Chris’ counterexample.

(If you’re not enrolled in the class, you will need a password to access this file. Email me if you want to access the file. Or follow these instructions: take our former chair’s first name; replace the second letter with the numeral 1; type the first letter in lowercase and capitalize the last one.)

After we’re done with that, we will move on to discuss Kolodny’s paper.

Remember that, on Monday, we go back to our official meeting schedule.

It’s Official

It’s official: henceforth, we will be meeting on Mondays from 11am until 1.30pm, in the usual place.

Note, however, that on 9/16 (i.e. a week from today) we will meet at 12:30pm. We apologize for the last minute changes.
